Two Kids Drown in Canal

Featured Replies

Two students drowned on Wednesday after falling into a canal in Banteay Meanchey’s provincial capital, according to a local police official. Preah Ponlea commune police chief Tin Sombo told Khmer Times yesterday that the two children along with another friend had gone to play near a canal in his commune’s Kbal Spean village.

The police chief, who was at the scene yesterday, said the accident happened because the two students could not swim. “The water is about 1.3-1.5 meters deep. That day, the three students didn’t have class so they decided to go swimming,” he said. “But unfortunately they accidentally fell into the canal and local people who were at the scene could not save the two because the water was flowing and they couldn’t see the children through the water.

“However, the surviving student grabbed some grass along the bank of the canal and was saved immediately,” he said. “The 13-year-old girl who died was Pen Theany, from Kor Tharn village, O Om Bil commune in Serey Sophorn city, a student at Se Sen secondary school, and the 15-year-old boy who died was Ouch Channa, from Se Sen village.
