BANGKOK: -- The Election Commission is due to meet on Wednesday to endorse the nation-wide results of August 7 referendum on the draft constitution.

Election commissioner in charge of election affairs Somchai Srisutthiyakorn said if the referendum results from 77 provinces were properly checked and correct, they would be approved by the commission in the afternoon and sent to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha for acknowledgement on the same day.

He disclosed that, so far, there has not been any protest against the vote counts since the end of the referendum and, if this remains so until 4 pm on Monday, all the results from 77 provinces will be tabled for the EC’s consideration on Wednesday.

However, he said the EC would report to the cabinet on Tuesday the unofficial results of the charter referendum and the attached questions. He anticipated that the voter’s turnout should be in the range between 58-60 percent with three percent invalid ballots which is higher than the turnout of the last referendum nine years ago.

The EC will, later this month, hold a meeting to consider the problems related to the referendum so that they will not be repeated in the next referendum.

Regarding the incidents of ripping up ballot sheets, Mr Somchai said the EC would inform police enquiry officers that the commission does not want to take legal action those who unintentionally tore up the sheets.

EC deputy secretary-general Thanit Sriprathet, meanwile, disclosed that out of 59 cases of ripping up ballot sheets, only one case was intentional.
