One ton of illegally imported buffalo meat and pork found in Nan province

NAN, 10 August 2016 (NNT)-The Nan Provincial Livestock Office has found more than one ton of illegally imported animal meats following a police raid in Muang district.

Ms. Nawapan Pukampan was charged with smuggling 1,020 kilograms of frozen buffalo meat, beef tongues and pork into Thailand from India and Brazil. All illegal meats were found in a large cold storage room during the raid. The 27-year old-woman from Tak reportedly rented a house in Nan and used it as a meat distribution center.

Authorities then proceeded to confiscate the meats, for which Ms. Nawapan failed to provide import clearance documents.

According to the Livestock Department, Indian and Brazilian buffalo meats are banned in Thailand.

The meats are expected to be buried later by the department.

what's wrong with eating Buffalo? Didn't this used to be a common enough menu item in Chiang Mai back in the day?

...and here we can't even get vitamins that we order from overseas...

...how did it get to the point where she actually had such a quantity of meat in her possession....???

its not what you know but who you know(or who's pockets you can help fill)

hi ourmanflint

it is not question of eating the buffalo mean. the question  is from where it was acquired. perishables like meat have to be store under maintained temperature and imported from reliable sources, failing which, the quality of the meat is compromised. the distributor in this case does not have any import documents, in which case she should be asked to explain the source of her acquiring the meat.

hi seajar

even at the expense of the health of the final consumers of the meat?  surely there should be some safe guards in the import and  distribution of perishable products, in particular.

How did the container get past customs? Somebody paid to look the other way no doubt...

In Laos Buffalo meat is on every menu, so why not import it from a neighbor country unless the meat is dodgy?

Why not cut it up and feed the starving dogs or people

Maybe the risk of foot and mouth?? Meat from unknown sources from both countries is suspect.

Yum, buffalo jerky..

There's already enough bull in Thailand, without having to import any more.
