Michael Phelps wins 21st gold medal in Day 4 of Rio Olympics

 

 

RIO DE JANEIRO: -- Michael Phelps has won his 20th Olympic gold medal in the 200 metres butterfly on Day 4 of the Rio Olympics. Japan’s Masato Sakai took silver with Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi winning bronze.

 

Then another gold medal for Phelps in the men’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay. The US won, with Phelps swimming the anchorleg. Britain won the silver medal, and Japan bronze.

 

The women’s Olympic 200 metres freestyle was won with a victory by the United States‘ Katie Ledecky giving her a second individual gold of the Games.

Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden took silver while Emma McKeon of Australia won bronze.

 

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu won her third Olympic gold medal in four days in the women’s 200m individual medley. Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor took the silver medal and Maya DiRado of the United States won bronze.

Personally I don't put much weight in relay medals but he also has a drawer full of individual

gold medals. A heck of an athlete.

And how many medals would Usain Bolt have if there was a 50m running forwards race, and a 50m running backwards race, and a 50m running on your hands race, and a 50m crawling race, and a 100m running backwards race and... and a relay for each of these events?  Nothing against swimming, I do it myself, but why not just make it "There's the pool, that's the distance, first one to get there wins, whether you want to do it freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, dog paddle or run along the bottom of the pool, up to you"?

Exactly my thoughts.  He's a great athlete, but his medal count would be impossible to achieve in most if not all sports other than swimming.  Give me the dexterity, precision and motor skill of soccer or tennis any time.   Seriously, who would you rather watch, Messi at his finest moments or Phelps?

But face it.

People look at athletes bodies in sports like swimming, diving, gymnastics, etc.

 

Anyway, it's an objective fact that Phelp's body is FREAKISH.Of course he has made the most of that so of course deserves the medals.

He may not have won any others, because he may not be much/any good at running other than forwards, but I get your point.

 

Admittedly, swimming gives an athlete the ability to accumulate medals at a rate greater than other sports.

 

I recall reading somewhere years back that he suffers Attention Deficit Disorder, and I think dyslexia??  He certainly has the facial features of a person 'on the spectrum' as it's known these days, but if you can swim as he does, is that an issue??

I don't understand the kissing medals thing though, no matter how much thought I put into it.  I often wonder what they do with their medals in the privacy of their room???   Now that could be interesting!!

 

If it was a  nobody, with little to no chance of winning, who won from nowhere, I sort of understand doing something silly in the excitement of the moment, but a seasoned campaigner like Phelps kissing a bit of metal?  

 

Biting a medal is even more bizarre.

I am not a big sport's fan, so on the Olympics, I'll take swimming and gymnastics to watch.   They happen quickly and I don't have to spend hours in front of the television.   

 

Regardless of what sport you enjoy, these  competitors are true champions, whether they win a medal or not.

I think anyone that represents their country at the Olympics is a Champion. The years of dedication, work, pain, missing out on a social life in many cases is puts me in total awe of them.

People like Phelps leave me with my jaw on the floor.

His ADD condition makes him an ideal candidate for swimming.  They're able to do routine, repetitive tasks, almost forever, and there is nothing more so than following that black line on the bottom of the pool.

 

Whichever way you look at it, he's an extraordinary athlete, and I think what makes him so special is that he isn't a one stroke specialist, like Hackett, Perkins and Thorpe, of years gone by.

 

He's just won his 4th Olympic gold medal in the 200 meters Individual Medley.  He's won the event at each of the last four Olympics!!

Phelps did what had not been done since 152 B.C.E.

 

With his victory last night in the 200-meter butterfly, Phelps tied the record of 12 individual titles first accomplished by an ancient Olympics Games running champion 2,168 years ago. 

 

According to Olympic historian Bill Mallon, Leonidas of Rhodes finished first in the stadion, diaulos and hoplite race at four straight Ancient Olympic Games from 164 BC to 152 BC.
