Just reading now in the other newspaper that Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT says that there could be up to 200,000  travel cancellations because of the blasts.

So, I guess the increase in Russian arrivals is badly needed.

"Mr.Hubert Schuster and Ms.Ezgi Oege, tourists from Germany, said violent incidents could take place anywhere and they went to a local market in the province just one day after the bombings. They said Thailand was a beautiful country with friendly people and they would definitely return to Thailand". 

TAT took a sample of 2 people and concluded that the bomb blasts did not affect tourism.

Unbelievable.

So it is possible for the Hotel Association to report an increase in tourist stays while the guest houses remain empty.  That would explain the puzzle of reports of increased tourist arrivals while small hotels, guest houses and other businesses that cater to independent travelers are hurting for business.  Package tours make it into official measures while the independent tourists that keep many thousands of Thais employed are staying away.

 

Thailand has been doing everything it can to dissuade adventurous tourists while Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and, now, Myanmar are becoming increasingly inviting.  No doubt package tours are great for the big hotel chains, but not for small businesses.  That's bad for Thailand, these small businesses employ a lot of Thais.

Thailand took a sample of two Germans, who speak, like they are doing a commercial, saying exactly, what TAT needed to hear!

Yesterday on Swampy i didn't see any chinese groups running around like drunk chickens.

 

It was not busy but the rows at immigration all had about 10 tourists in qeueu.

obviously will have some impact, amazing how thailand tourism, GDP & currency rate keeps good during protests, coups, bombs & incompetence ! figures don't seem match tourism & trade on the ground though ! 3 IT/Print companies we used in thailand gone & many in retail trade struggling massively with huge amount of trading premises empty for months & contracts more flexible/lower cost than ever  ...
in other countries simple government issues or banking expert comments have immence impact :-/
