Worker Dies after Chemical Attack

Featured Replies

A worker at a plastic bag producing factory died immediately on Saturday night after being attacked with a chemical used to melt plastic bags in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district, according to police, who added that a suspect was arrested the same day. Hour Mengvang, the deputy district police chief, said yesterday that a man who worked in a factory producing plastic bags died after having an argument with a co-worker while drinking alcohol.

“The perpetrator used a kind of liquid chemical for making the plastic bags melt, but it is not a kind of acid, to douse on the victim’s face when they were arguing with each other while drinking at their workplace,” he said. Mr. Mengvang said the suspect, 18-year-old Mab Mai, took a large bottle full of the liquid to douse Morn Theara, causing him to die before reaching the hospital.

“I do not know the substance in the liquid that the perpetrator poured on the victim, but the factory owner used it to melt the old plastic bags to make new ones, but it has the same effect as acid,” he said. Mr. Mengvang said that a friend of the victim tried to help him by bathing him and sending him to the hospital, but the doctor said the victim was already dead.
