Does anyone recognise this river mammal?

There is a river at the end of my soi near Sri Racha. Yesterday I was looking over the river and spotted a large air breathing mammal swimming past. It had some similarities to a Coypu except for 2 things. 1) it was at least 2 metres long, including the tail which was about 1 metre long. 2)The tail had lighter coloured rings around it.

The animal clearly had fur and was totally at home in the water. The fur was brown in colour with rings around the tail of a much lighter colour (looked yellowish but water is very dirty).

Many thanks for that Shot. I've looked at the Otter Civet and the shape is similar. However, it was a lot heavier and longer and I saw no stripes on it's back. I am, though, convinced now that it was another type of Civet but don't know what. The nearest I've found is the Large Indian Civet which apparently does exist in Thailand. When I first saw it my instant reaction was that it was a small croc or alligator until I looked more closely and saw that it most definitely was not.

Thanks again for your reply.

B) I saw an Otter near the Pran Buri river in Prachuab Kiri Khan province. There is a species of Otter in Thailand. In my 7 years working there I only seen one so they must be somewhat rare. The one I seen was about a meter long total and brown in color,no stripes  with a slick coat.

My experience was about 10 years ago. Beautiful area . We had a Seafood Processing plant very near Khao Kalok. Back in 2000 when I lived there the area was quite remote with all manner of Wildlife.

Short clawed otter Aonyx cinerea

They've kept me awake many times on their night sorties.

Thanks Lemonjelly but it was very, very much bigger than this. At least 1 metre body length plus 1 metre tail length. I would estimate it's weight at 50+ kg. The weight estimate based on the weight of my biggest dog who is about half the size of the animal I saw.
