Whilst your post does have merit, I think it goes back to Merkel (and you are right, she/the CDU wasn't technically far-left, but often acted like it) and her unusually long tenure of power caused the usual poor judgements and assumptions, and when that happens with a few ill-thought-through disasterous decisions... especially the one where she hubritically opened the door to over a million undocumented migrants with no screening and just said "We can do it" with the effects only being realised long after she left power... history will judge her harshly on that one sentence. It goes back to her and a completely niave idea, which Germany is paying dearly now for. I know they wanted immigration to fix their economy and demographic problem, but there are better ways to do this than just fling the doors open and accept anyone and everyone from the all the basket cases of the world... what could go wrong? You reap what you sow, I'm afraid... and she didn't consider the reprecussions later down the road, which are all too clear now. People in general now are much more ready to grab their pitchfork and go out shouting and making themselves felt than before because so much is wrong. Politicians have to acknowledge that and find answers to placate the voting public and make things better, as that is their purpose... but they often seem to have forgotten this.
