Will Thailand fall behind on the Nexus “Sailfish” and “Marlin” release?

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I managed to lose my old phone. Long story… In any case, I’m in need of a new phone. It seems there are a lot of rumors about Google’s latest devices (“Sailfish” and “Marlin”) likely releasing in September.

Can someone tell me if Google/Huawei devices release in Thailand the same time as they release in the US and elsewhere? If Thailand is behind other countries on these releases, generally by how long?

I’m just trying to decide if I should buy something now or wait until it releases. If Thailand’s going to be months behind, I’ll just buy now. It sounds like these should release in September or October, so if Thailand gets them the same time as other countries, I'll hold off.

I got a Nexus 3, and later a Nexus 5 within a pretty short time of them being released in other places... but of course that was some time ago, I'm not sure if the newer models are also available quickly, FWIW Nexus devices are not so popular here, it's Samsung Samsung Samsung :P

A complex question to answer.

Thai on-line shops here will import grey-market product, expect to pay a hefty premium.

Google doesn't sell Nexus phones in Thailand. If they get sold here the manufacturer (LG, Huawei, HTC, etc.) sells them, often in conjunction with a single-carrier promotional tie-in.

Nexus phones tend to sell out of initial inventory in a few hours.

Nexus phones can come in more than one variant: the EMEA/AP one may be better for Thailand,

I haven't stayed up to speed on the Nougat launch devices, but it looks like HTC might make one or both of these models? HTC may choose to sell/distribute the product in Thailand, but not likely given the cost to localize.

You could source a 6P or 5X, both of which are being heavily discounted.

It might be a long wait on a "Nexus 7N" unless you can get one from the U.S. when they first become available.

It looks like Android operating system software ver. 7/Nougat may drop tomorrow on some devices like the 5X and 6P.

"It’s unclear which is the Sailfish and which is the Marlin, but it’s possible that the Sailfish is G-2PW2100 and the Marlin has the higher G-2PW4100 model number since it’s slightly higher-end."

Thanks for the response, guys. I ended up just buying a Galaxy S7 Edge, since it sounds like getting the Nexus will be a hassle here in Thailand. It's been rough not having a phone for the short time I've been without one. It's unrealistic for me to make it that long...

Hard to go without a phone. In a pinch, as of today, I'd probably get a Moto X Pure, still some here with importers (11.900/16 GB, 13,900/32 GB, although there are still some of the 'designer' series in 32 GB for 11,900, I'd just get a case).

A friend has the S7 Edge, it's a gorgeous phone. There are some decent promos now, as little as 23,900.

I bought from the Samsung store in CentralFestival. Cash price was 22,500. 23,000 if on a credit card.

That's a great price. Most of the 23,900 promotions include a whole host of freebies, accessories, doo-dads, and discounted plans.

Cheapest grey-market today is 20,500 (although that may well be the SM-G935F version?).

Model number in the OS shows SM-G935FD. I hope that's okay...

Yes, that's the Asia-Pacific version which Samsung/Thailand sells in Thailand, just a DUOS (dual SIM) version of the SM-G935F. Both have the Exynos 8890 chipset.
