Three hand grenades were discovered on the Mekong riverbank in Tbong Khmum province on Tuesday afternoon, police announced yesterday. The grenades – two Russian-made and the third from China – were found in a bag that also contained gunpowder, Krouch Chhmar district deputy police chief Sem Kunthea told Khmer Times.

“We already have informed technical experts from the Cambodia Mine Action Center’s [CMAC] officials to collect these grenades,” he said, noting that police had already removed them from their water-side location. He described the grenades as being in “new” condition, and still useable, however he stressed that their discovery “doesn’t impact national security at all.”

He said that after 1979, some people in Cambodia stockpiled weapons left over from the nearly 10 preceding years of fighting and upheaval. Following an amnesty in the early 1990s to collect the weapons, he said some must still have remained.  “We assume that whoever got rid of those grenades by the riverbank was worried about being charged with illegal weapons possession, after the deadline to hand weapons in expired.”
