Cambodians Repatriated from Malaysia

Ten Cambodian workers who had been locked up in Bukit Jalil prison in Malaysia arrived home this week after they were helped by the embassy and released from the prison.  Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said the 10 Cambodians included four women and they returned to Cambodia on Wednesday. 
 

The 10 who returned on Wednesday – Senh Khloeng, 33, Minh Naphy, 28, Set Moslim, 27, Ly Mai, 34, Yea Pov, 25, El Teat, 21, Mat Manarn, 29, Heng Poutry, 26, Yet Sreymom, 42 and Tohyring Yusos, 20 – came from Tboung Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang provinces and Phnom Penh. He added that according to Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn’s instructions, the Cambodian embassy in Malaysia worked with the International Organization for Migration to get them repatriated. 
 

Earlier this month, the Cambodian embassy worked with Malaysian authorities to get the release of 18 Cambodians from Bukit Jalil prison.  All 18 were jailed for allegedly lacking the proper work permits and all had been sent to Malaysia by informal brokers, many of whom abandoned them once they arrived.
