Agricultral Exports to Thailand Still Blocked

Featured Replies

Agricultural exports to Thailand are still being blocked at the border by Thai authorities over concerns that officials’ seals and certificates of origin are being forged, as Cambodian officials try to resolve the issue. The Ministry of Commence on Friday issued a statement stressing that the ministry was working with Thai counterparts to resolve the issue, and would meet before the end of the month to address any lingering issues.

“Regarding the issue, the Ministry of Commerce is dealing with the Thai Commerce Ministry via the Cambodian embassy in Thailand, by sending updated specimens of official signatures and seals,” the statement said, noting that this had been an ongoing effort since the beginning of August, and that other regional countries had also received the updates. “This means that this update of signature specimens will iron out the issue.”

Ly Uttny, president of Banteay Meanchey’s Chamber of Commerce, told Khmer Times on Friday that the issue was causing problems for exporters along the border. “It has been happening for more than 10 days so far, and our exporters cannot export any agricultural products to Thailand because of the mistake with our Certificate of Origin. I am a bit concerned for them because this may affect their products while there is demand in Thailand,” he said.
