BANGKOK: -- Two older men died after eating a grilled toad found in the rain on Sunday while a third man and two children also became sick from contact with the same dead toad.

The toad-eating happened in Nan’s Thung Chang neighborhood. This morning, health officials went to the house where it happened to collect the rest of the toad meat to examine it for clues.

Grilled toad is a common snack in the countryside. It’s not as common as eating rats and lizards, but it does happen. Most toads are not safe to eat. Many have deadly poison glands. These men picked the wrong type of toad to eat.

Folk lore dysfunction. You would think at 70 years old he would have been a bit wiser.

A picture or description of the species in question would be useful.

It was a toadally wrong decision.

Would seem to be the case.

hard to stop when many consider anything that moves as food:blink:

I'd err instead, to travelling South, over the border, for paddy chicken

or eat some crispy cricket, or drink some snake blood

Misidentify a species and you're toadst.

Died from cooked toads????........there's more to this!

The French have a way with frogs. Do you know why?

Looking at the photo, I never realized that toads have such a cute little derriere :)

Pretty cool that they found a grilled toad in the road. I guess that is food to go....

Nature always bats last....

I toad them not to but they ate it anyway.

even my dog and cat leave toads alone, one quick sniff and they shake their heads in disgust.

so maybe this actually does qualify for a Darwin award? Many nominations on TV pages, but this sounds like a true winner.

The Asian cane toad, introduced into Australia in the 1930s to eradicate sugar cane parasites, is deadly poison.

These toads breed like crazy, and they're spreading across the north of  the country.  Wild life such as full size crocs eat these and it kills them.

Wow stupidity reigns

Proof that wisdom doesn't always come with age. Some idiots can live a long life too.

respect your elders but make sure they deserve your respect first.

Theres a woman selling bloated toads down the market. They have some red markings on them. Dorris wont buy them and shes able to eat balaa 3 days in a row without dying.

*edit* i was gonna write 3 days on the trot, she usually does get the trots for 3 days after eating that crap.

Wonder if this toad eats toad?

If the toadstools don't getcha...the toads will! Most likely the Black-spectacled or Black-spined Toad. Breeds in HUGE numbers during the monsoon.

The toads -- also known as the Javanese, black-spectacled or black-spined toad -- are long-living, rapid breeders that produce up to 40,000 eggs a year.  Asian toads have also had an impact on human health, with reported cases of death and cardiac arrest in Laos.
