PM: Resolution of southern unrest requires time

BANGKOK, 30 August 2016 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has reiterated that time is needed in the ongoing effort to end violence in the Deep South as changes are being made through development and education.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha made a comment regarding today’s meeting between Gen Aksara Kerdphol, head of the government’s negotiating team, and members of the separatist group Mara Patani, saying the discussion has not yielded any agreement as insurgent attacks in Thailand’s southernmost region have not been brought to a halt as requested by the government.

The premier pointed out that the latest talk was staged in accordance with standard practices, with Malaysia serving as coordinator between the two sides. He also said the southern unrest cannot be tackled through political means but rather the use of development and education. As the peace restoration process is unlikely to become successful anytime soon, he asked that everyone allow sufficient time for authorities to perform their duties first.

Besides separatism, Gen Prayut noted that the Deep South is also plagued by many other relevant problems, such as drug trafficking. However, he said those issues are extremely sensitive and any comments should be made with utmost caution.

Sounds like the talks failed.

he asked that everyone allow sufficient time for authorities to perform their duties

Now there's a novel concept, I now understand why it's going to take time.

" However, he said those issues are extremely sensitive and any comments should be made with utmost caution."

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

I think the PM should follow his own advice, or is it just another example of "do as I say and not as I do"?

Well it's only been going on for decades.

A few more wont make a difference.

"...time is needed in the ongoing effort..."

Typical of Prayut, he has the words mixed up - again.

"Effort is needed in the ongoing time"!

They will solve it. Probably be some time around the time hell freezes over

They should talk to the UK, it's not unlike the way Northern Ireland used to be, a mixture of religion and discrimination, a deadly mixture

He must be vying for for the 100 year war record. 30 years ago there was armed security on the border and insurgency problems.

And you have wasted 2 years by halting the peace negotiation and changing the lead negotiator and not putting focus on the south problems and complete denial of the escalation.

The little general always grasps at straws. In this case, he has been reading Hussein Obama's playbook theory for ending islamic terrorism by helping the terrorists find jobs. Why the heck would they work when they can come as refugees and get monthly checks and housing?

The little general's flipping coin and fortune teller must be about worn out these days.

The Boss PM definitely has the time.  He is going to be around for a long long time.

TRANSLATION:

It's the insurgents fault and not the military:

The insurgency refuses to unilaterally throw down its arms for an indeterminate period to be decided by the military as a precondition to peace talks, insists on international observers during peace talks, wants immunity for its leaders during peace talks, and insists that the insurency group be recognized by the name Mara Patani for purposes of peace talks.

Instead of giving peace talks priority, the military has instead pursued creation of Safe Zones, the Vietnam war styled Thung Yang Daeng model, Pracharat Ruam Jai projects and private Village Protection Forces to diminish Malay-Thai public support for peace talks.

I'm sure he said last year that the problem would be resolved by the end of 2015.

Guess that was last year's resolution tho. More than a month ago so everyone's forgotten already.

Chook

Education ! They kill the teachers and burn the schools.

Over two years of utter bs... Roadmap this, article 44 that.. Blah blah.. All that's been achieved is... Err.... And nothing at all in the south except, "it will take time".

Yes requires a real PM and no need road maps lol. Your road map is laughable. You reformed only your pockets.
