BANGKOK: - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today presided over a ceremony commissioning two newly purchased transport planes into active service of the Royal Thai Air Force at the Sixth Wing base in Don Mueang.

The Russian aircraft were purchased at US$ 34 million each.

Thailand ordered the purchase of two aircraft from Russia.

The aircraft will be used for defense and transportation purposes, including transporting important figures, and supporting government activities such as on humanitarian purposes, he said.

  1. I wonder who is going to service them. The Americans service aircraft made by the US during their Cobra Gold exercises!

It is one of the best 300 planes in the world procured by the Government and has high efficiency but at reasonable price.

Of course, but it would be asking too much from the reporter to mention the make and model.

The deal was done last year, the Russians buying rubber and the Thai's 3 x  Sukhoi superjet passenger aircraft ,

Yes, but never mind, the government will buy them a couple of submarines to make up for it.

The other Engiish newspaper that does not allow links here has a more detailed report.

Sukhoi Superjet 100LR

Indonesia it seems, has ordered 12 of these....Thailand 2.....I wonder what the commission values were?

VIP for the scrabbled egg-on-cap brigade is more likely,

and the Airforce itself will itself carry on with it's Hercs

$34 million per aircraft is very cheap.
Comparable aircraft for 100 passengers cost much more.
A318 around $75 Million or 737-700 around $80 Million.

I am wondering if this is the final price or other transactions are counted against it.

Funny, this Russian newspaper in February said the aircraft were only $ 27-28 million each... :whistling:

Compared to submarines, Russian aircrafts don't need any maintenance. They will surface automaticly what you can't say about submarines.. If the Thai would build a submarine, it would set a world record for sub merging. It would never ever come up again...

agreed...

but perhaps thai pilots are not as gun - hoe...

given the small number of incidents with this type of plane it actually appears to be safe (r) than previous generations of soviet made aircraft.

Lol at all the anti russians here. Aww competetion, we wouldnt want that now.

Beware boys... as the Indonesians found out the hard way... these are not earth movers.

RIP Capt Gatot, my good friend who was killed riding in the demo flight...

Maybe they could base them on their plane-less "aircraft" carrier

This is going to be an interesting adventure as I don't believe anyone with seniority is going to fly on the airplane. The planes  will soon either be in storage or in a crash.

With 12 C130s but 1 Boeing 737, 1 Airbus 319, 5 HS 748s and now these 2 (or is it 3?) Sukhois they do seem to have rather a lot of "VIP" transports, compared to cargo/ troop transports.
