BANGKOK: -- The Thai Bankers Association has warned members of the public to be on guard against the recent rise of call centre fraud.

TBA said that the fraudsters would use telephones through computer system or VOIP (Voice over IP) which is capable of copying any phone numbers in Thailand to claim that they are from commercial banks or from the Department of Special Investigation to lure their prospectus victims to make financial transactions through their ATM cards or to transfer money into their bank accounts.

The fraudsters have come up with an assortment of tricks or stories to shock or to surprise their targeted victims with offers of unexpected rewards or misfortunes such as a huge debt prompting the victims to disclose their confidential financial information to the fraudsters or to undertake transactions through the ATMs.

This practice is all over the world and very prevalent in highly developed Canada.

I am surprised that it took this long to surface in Thailand. (Wake up Nigerians).

Seasoned Investigators often use a pretext, a false story to secure information not even on a data base.  A clever investigator does not even need a computer these days, just a telephone or a face to face conversation with a subject's neighbor, friend or spouse.

Scammers use similar methods and they are very affective.

Very scary!

It just took them over 10 years to figure this out ???

Wow...
