Think your'll find also was elements of the Free Polish Army which eventually took Monte-Casino in WWII after the US Army had had a go, then the New Zealanders had a go, then the poles were sent in, this against Fallshirmjagers, crack German Paras in well dug in positions overlooking the slopes of the mountain abbey.

off topic, but one of my customers in the IT industry was ex Free Polish Army in action at Monte Casino, a man with the hardest eyes I've ever seen.
