Police chief disagrees to proposed termination of money reward for drug busts

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Royal Thai Police commissioner yesterday voiced opposition to an attempt to terminate the practice of paying of reward money to investigators involved in narcotics cases saying that they were an important motivation for police officers for their efforts.

 

He questioned if not to be used as reward what other use should the money be put to.

 

Comment from the police commissioner Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda came as Justice Minuster Gen Phaiboon Khumchaya said he would like that money reward for the seizure of methamphetamines or “Yaa Baa” be terminated after he has proposed to remove Yaa Baa from Category 1 drug to Category 2.

 

Pol Gen Chakthip admitted that personally he was against the Ministry of Justice’s proposal to stop giving reward money to police officers involved in drug busts.

 

He stated that these reward money was in fact an important motivating factor for officers who are involved in a very difficult task.

 

He went on asking what better use for the money than to reward officers for their sacrifices.

The rewards money is important in the police doing the job they were sworn and paid

to  in the first place, the gravy train of rewards from drug busts is in danger, well

commissioner, this is only the casualty of deregulating drugs use to a misdemeanor acts,

lots more headaches to come...

Currently police are more transparent in their corruption .

Tourists should be taking note

He explains perfectly why the police in general are not really motivated to do their job,i see it everyday.

It is that kind of mindset that needs to chance,but who is going to flip the switch?

I believe that money taken as a bribe or whatever you want to call it really motivates some officers to do something to

supplement their meager income.

When there is more and more oppositions against this what do you think is going to happen?

Will they work harder or lose their motivation?

I suppose the ten years since social media exposed all things Thai was the Nirvana westerners enjoyed......it gradually dawned this place is filthy evil and corrupt to core.

 

We should thank the junta in completing the enlightenment with statements....that only draw more obvious conclusions

Of course they will disagree, police only find drugs when some money is put up.

No money, no drugs will be found.

Basically bribing police to do the job they are already being paid to do.

Farcical thats what it is.

So, this explains the increase in large drug busts over the last couple of years, like they say if something seems too good to be true it usually is, it's no wonder they've got huge smiles on their faces when lined up behind the alleged perpetrators. 

This coming from a career cop who's NLA asset declaration showed a nett worth in excess of 968,000,000 baht. I wonder what percentage of each and every reward goes back to him?

Re-read this topic three times the more I see posted about Thailand and how the systems are invoked and managed it saddens me more each day

He should be fired immediately.

Someone needs to explain to him that the motivation for doing police work is to serve and protect (although you would expect a police chief to know this and be educating his subordinates to this fact).

Police work is NOT meant to be a business for these lazy corrupt P.O.S.

If he hasn't just laid out the perfect reason that police reform is needed then I don't know what else can be said.

FIRE THEM ALL!!! Start over with a clean slate.

The military can do the police work in the interim as they are doing most of it now anyway. The only busts that catch criminals are the ones that the military in involved in.

Drug rehabilitation schemes for addicts who wish to quit?

 

Training schemes to upgrade the investigative skills of the BIB?

 

So many options...

If the financial incentive is removed the amount of drug offenders in prison will drop massively.

 

The police won't be bothered anymore.

Just take all the rewards n give them all a raise instead so that they dont need bribes n have real pride in their jobs

Absolutely! I say stop the reward system immediately, and come down hard on bribery.  All the roadblocks will disappear overnight and there will be no incentive to plant drugs on innocent backpackers!

The reward money is a percentage amount of the assessed street value of the drugs "seized", paid to the "informant" regarding the location of said drugs. Working as an "active" registered police informant,  is a real "profession" in Thailand. I personally know of a Thai informant who earned 10M-Baht on a single bust, alone. His reward was all the cash currency present on the premises, at the time of the seizure. How do I know about it? Thais like to brag.
