Public health minister assures no outbreak of Zika infection

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Public Health Minister Dr Piyasakol Sakonsattayathorn assured on Thursday that there is no outbreak of Zika virus in Thailand but he admitted there have been sporadic cases of Zika infection.

13 new cases were reported last week in the provinces of Chiang Mai, Chanthaburi, Petchabun and Bung Karn and their conditions were not serious and all of them have been kept under close watch in their respective areas for a period of 28 days as required which is the incubation period of the disease, said Dr Piyasakol.

97 cases in 10 provinces in the first half of this year, including 13 new cases in four provinces last week - and he's still denying there is an outbreak?!?

The minister clearly uses a different definition of "outbreak" than the WHO :-

"A disease outbreak is the occurrence of cases of disease in excess of what would normally be expected in a defined community, geographical area or season. An outbreak may occur in a restricted geographical area, or may extend over several countries. It may last for a few days or weeks, or for several years.

A single case of a communicable disease long absent from a population, or caused by an agent (e.g. bacterium or virus) not previously recognized in that community or area, or the emergence of a previously unknown disease, may also constitute an outbreak and should be reported and investigated."

Trust me I'm a Govt. Minister, would I ever lie to the public.. 

Yesterday there was a denial of any outbreak.

Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms. The most common symptoms of Zika are

Fever

Rash

Joint pain

Conjunctivitis (red eyes)

Other symptoms include:

Muscle pain

Headache

How long symptoms last

Zika is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. People usually don’t get sick enough to go to the hospital, and they very rarely die of Zika. For this reason, many people might not realize they have been infected. Symptoms of Zika are similar to other viruses spread through mosquito bites, like dengue and chikungunya.

 

So nothing to wet your panties over 

These people would deny the presence of world war 3..... if it was going to affect tourism!

Denial

Thais mindset isn't a terribly logical or even a consistent place. Most, given the choice to face a hideous or terrifying truth would rather  conveniently avoid it, choosing more  or less the convenience route. 

This doesn't make them strong, weak good or bad people. It just makes them Thai people.

Its funny that Thailand is always the odd man out in most of these critical cases. I guess we just live right here. Mass hypnotism in motion.

Absolutely shocking the outright lies and mistruths that are propagated every day in LoS by all parts of society, in a way I can understand the press being a little bit wary about quoting anything that might upset the little general but it does not make it right....
