Woman Given Seven Years for Trafficking

Featured Replies

A 38-year-old woman was yesterday convicted by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sentenced to seven years in prison for trafficking an underage Cambodian girl from Kampong Cham province to marry a man in China in 2014.   Pov Chinda, from the capital’s Por Senchey district, was charged with “unlawful removal for cross-border transfer” under article 11 of the Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation after being arrested by the Interior Ministry’s anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection unit on August 11, 2015, according to presiding judge E Thavavireak.

She was arrested after the mother of the victim filed a lawsuit with the Interior Ministry on July 8, 2015, the judge added.   “The court ordered her to pay a total of 25 million riel [about $6,250] to the victim as the plaintiff in this case,” he said.

The victim’s mother, 50-year-old Ven Sok, said she randomly met Ms. Chinda in Kampong Cham province’s Prey Chhour district in November 2014. During the encounter, Ms. Chinda told her that her daughter got married to a Chinese man in 2013 and they were now living in Cambodia. Ms. Sok said Ms. Chinda persuaded her to send her 14-year-old daughter to work in China, saying she would ask her daughter, Chea Kunthea, to help Ms. Sok’s daughter find a job.
