Canada's oil and gas industry warns legalized pot a workplace hazard

Featured Replies

Canada’s oil and gas industry is calling on the federal government to expressly prohibit pot use in safety-sensitive workplaces if it moves ahead with its plans to legalize marijuana.

In an Aug. 29 letter to the government’s Task Force on Marijuana Legalization, Regulation and Restriction, oil and gas industry safety association Enform warns alcohol and drug use is already “at the forefront” of the challenges facing the upstream petroleum industry’s workplace safety efforts and marijuana legalization could make the situation worse.

“The legalization of marijuana will have an adverse impact on workplace safety and on an employer’s ability to ensure a safe work environment,” Enform CEO Cameron MacGillivray wrote. “Enform respectfully submits that any legislation that is considered must address the obligations of employers to maintain a safe work environment and the workplace safety risks associated with marijuana use and abuse.”

Why don't they just make it illegal for those who work on rigs and so on. Put it in a labor contract and be done with it. No need to spoil it for all. How about alcohol hin a workplace.. seems like a bigger hazard.

Drugs & Alcohol are already forbidden and testing positive for any of these substances can result in being fired.

The Energy zindustry is saying if Canada makes MJ (marijuana) legal then it should make it criminally illegal in certsin high risk work environments . I don't really understand the benefit of this unless it will make it easier to fire someone if they commit a criminal act rather than violate an employment contract ( which would probaly first result in costly arbitration?).

This is an interesting request on the part of Industry since MJ would already fall under the same laws as alcohol use even if it were legalized.

Since it's already banned on the job, and testing positive can result in being fired (just like alcohol, which is also legal), I suspect this is just people expressing their personal beliefs under the color of corporate safety policy in an attempt to get their way.

they should drug and alcohol test the people claiming benifits also not just us who work in the oil and gas to pey there money for there drugs and alcohol,,!

Problem for pot smokers is that it can be detected 30 days after they lit one up! If they can make a test that only looks back 24 hours then maybe they have case. Someone in Colorado saying that traffic accidents involved tested positive for MJ. If you smoked a week prior to accident it will show up but I've never smoked anything that lasted more than a few hours
