CNRP to March Despite Warning

As planned, the opposition party and its supporters will deliver petitions today related to Cambodia’s current political situation to a number of embassies that are signatory countries of the Paris Peace Accords, despite a warning by City Hall. Kem Sokha, the acting Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) president, yesterday posted a video clip of a brief press conference at which senior party official Eng Chhay Eang said fellow lawmakers and supporters would gather at 8am on Monday at party headquarters and then march to the embassies to submit petitions at 10am.

Mr. Chhay Eang added that the petition was formulated when leaders of the world’s major countries, including Asean member countries, met in Vientiane in July. Cambodia has now moved away from the spirit of the Paris Peace Accords and the constitution, especially the implementation of a liberal democracy, he said.

“The main and the only purpose of the CNRP is that we want to have the elections free and fair, we want to have a mechanism of organizing an election in which all parties would accept, and our two leaders can take part in politics and the election,” Mr. Chhay Eang said. Via social media and Facebook, some opposition activists and officials posted a map showing the planned route of the march to the embassies, starting from CNRP headquarters in Chak Angre Krom commune on Norodom Boulevard.
