The funny part in this is the follow statements from the Public Health Ministry;)

Quote
  • The Public Health Ministry has played down fears of a Zika virus outbreak in Thailand, saying the disease is already common in the country.
  • He asked the public not to panic as Zika was not deadly or severely contagious.
  • the mosquito-borne Zika virus has become widespread since the infection was first recorded in Thailand in 2012
  • Another 30 pregnant women nationwide have been infected with the virus.  Of them, six have given birth to healthy babies.
  • public health permanent secretary Sophon Mekthon claimed Zika was not a new disease, despite recent publicity, as it is found in Thailand and other Asean countries.

But did they not say no Zika in Thailand for just a couple of months ago :)

I would be alarmed if i lived or was preparing to visit Bangkok.

With all respect to you and the reply you give to the Zika article.

One thing you forget is the fact that regardless where you are, the Zika or other viruses, bacteria and nasty things that are are around, are already at the comer or even worse already in your back yard. Why?

The word 'quarantine' comes from the Italian number 40 and refers to the 40 days people had to stay in isolation to be sure they were healthy in the past. 40 Days because of the black plague.

In the past traveling took long time too and was mainly by foot, horse of ship. And as we know for for example Columbus it's travelings and the meet and greet he had with the locals in his called America that even the 40 days are not enough. the locals died of illnesses we have resistance to and they did get from the sailors.

Modern transportation times make is possible to be on the most places in the civilist world quick. That brings the problem that strange unwanted things are being able to be introduced in to the area of destination. And the introduced new things can spread  easy as well if is a mobile as the human it transportation is in the area and makes it let spread around quick.

You can stay at home in your area all you life and still it is someone else that will be  the cause who brings it to you.

Whole Thailand is in 1.5 hrs of flight or  18 hrs by car, whole the world also in 18 hrs of flight

Thailand wants to have tourism as one of the key economies with also the health care, meaning attracting a lof of people from huge distances.

Beside that the way the Thai habit of sharing food and water is not the way is recommended and helps also spreading and infecting.

As you see it is around the corner or in your backyard.

Health and city officials in Thailand downplayed risks from rising infections from the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which is linked to serious birth defects, and expressed concern that disclosing information would damage its tourism industry.

  • "We don’t want people to be too alarmed."
  • "The truth is we don’t know the extent of the Zika spread in Thailand," he added.
  • Thailand has one of the highest number in the region, with more than 100 confirmed since January.
  • ministry epidemiologist Anuttarasakdi added that it did not want to deter tourists.
  • "The information on Zika is quite sensitive because if we say which province has infections then attention will turn on that province, and if that province is popular with tourists it will have an impact on tourism,"
