BANGKOK:-- Three illegal Chinese tour guides arrested at Don Muang airport yesterday could face up to five years in jail for doing jobs reserved for Thais.

The guides - who could all speak Thai - were carted off to the Don Muang police station along with documents in their possession.

Labour department officials said they were doing a job reserved for Thai nationals and suspected they had been working like this for some considerable time.

Thai law allows for up to five years jail for this offence with a fine anywhere between 2,000 and 100,000 baht. Employers are liable to a 100,000 baht fine for each illegal worker in their employ.

So, are the Charlies at the Labour Dept going to magically conjure up thousands of Chinese fluent local tour guides for all the container loads of Chinese tourists that the TAT are boasting of? When there's not enough guides, the tourists won't come..... Wait, don't tell me, they're going to organise 30 hour language courses to get local guides fluent....

Suspicious that the hammer wasn't Thai, Somchai proceeded to bang the nail into the plank with his head.

With the shut down of OA, and all their tour buses and zero cost tours, I'm guessing there's not as much of a need now?  I heard yesterday that Pattaya beach had almost no Chinese tourists.

Then the bus just left, driving 130km/hr on the highway while being escorted by police.

Did you miss them?

Same as  every country. Illegal workers are jailed or deported. (Except Mexicans in the U.S.)

the police should remove them because if they didn't there would be foreigners flooding in from everywhere taking Thai jobs. Which would be unacceptable in any country.

The Thais are very generous in this regard, letting in millions of non Thai workers (mainly from Burma, Laos and Cambodia), but enough is enough.

the knee jerk protectionism strikes again. amazing that should there be no Thais to do the job then you have to leave the job undone.

If there is a Thai available but they have zero skills of qualifications to do the job do you still have to use the Thai?

In the tourist industry they need to use non Thai workers since the Thais foreign language skills are so bad. specially now when the amount of Chinese and russian tourists are so high. The Scandinavian charter organizers have always had their own representatives here at their hotels.

So in your eyes they deserve 5 years in a Thai jail for working (not stealing, murdering or raping) in a field that is reserved for Thai?

Just to confirm what kind of person you are.

We are all humans at the the end of the day.

Why are so many posters such drama Queens? Where does it say they were sentenced?
5 years is the max and the only way they would get that is if they committed a major major fraud on top of being illegal.

They will get less than a year if that. Probably even just a 100k fine and deported

Don't the they (judiciary legislature and executive) know that there's pots of money to be made by enforcing the law which will help the country become richer which in turn will make more money?

Sorry about that. Such a stupid question.

Is that a very bad joke ?

" very generous" with slave burmese people on fishing boats ? or paid next to nothing in so many mills ?

If thai guides can speak fluently chinese , we should know about that .

Pretty well prepared , all could speak Thai , no mean feat in itself, all calculated and thought out by someone else...................................:coffee1:

Many Chinese are studying Thai at Chinese and Thai universities.

There is enormous opportunity for those who can cater to Chinese tourists in other countries.

You're missing the point; there's obviously not enough Chinese fluent local tour guides, those arrested speak Thai, they're not "stealing jobs" from the Thai as the number of local guides cannot meet demand...... How about leaving them be?
