Lighting Remedy

Featured Replies

Have an external porch downlighter that is about 15 feet above the entrance to house. It gets inhabited by 100's if not 1000's of tiny insects that during the day go about their business and at night make their way back to the

light fitting. In fact you can scarely see the light when turned on due to the mass of insects. I've had it cleared out once but they just come back, not sure why the heat from the light does not effect them. Anyhow....

any ideas on how to get rid of them permanently or alternative form of lighting for that particular area?

You could try an LED lamp, they (apparently) don't emit the light wavelength that attracts insects. There are also yellow "don't attract insects" lamps available if you don't mind a yellow light (at least it's not red).

Is it enclosed?  Bung in a couple of mothballs (naphthalene balls), they seem to discourage most wildlife.

Yes, yellow light repels them, whilst blue, including the ultrviolet strip lights attract them...thats why the latter are used in the electrical zappers. People prone to moquito bites, could do well to think about the colour of their clothing.

Please use the On- Off switch which is positioned on the wall of your house.

Or stick your mother in-law outside; away from the house about 5 meter. Tie a 300 watt light to her head.

Some good stuff to try... as for the MIL suggestion,  I have a FIL who fits the bill perfectly and then some, so thanks for the offers of a freebie MIL, but I gracefully decline ... lol

How about a rather large mozzy net, draped around the porch?

But do remember, that although you can't see beyond that curtain, everyone out side the netting can see you LOL
