BANGKOK: -- Police said that they expect a quick arrest in the death of a taxi driver who was shot in the head in Bang Plee east of Bangkok on Tuesday.

The driver ended up still in his car in a fish pond and though he was rescued by the owner of the pond he was dead. The driver has been named as Arkhom Buphala, 39, reported Thairath.

The gunman is thought to have shot Arkhom then jumped out of the moving vehicle. Amnat Jancharoen of the regional police said that they believe that the inertia of the vehicle carried it into the pond.

The gunman was seen by the fish pond owner going along the road nearby on foot.

Amnat and local and regional officers held a crisis meeting yesterday to work on the case and visited the site of the shooting in Soi Thee Din Thai off the Theparak Road.

The gunman fled the area after stealing a motorbike. This was reported yesterday as belonging to a Pakistani ice-cream seller but no mention of the owner was made in today's latest report.

However the bike has been found nearby and police who have studied CCTV and GPS data know that the taxi journey began at the end of Soi Mangorn in the Theparak area.

Amnat said that it was too early to say whether the shooting was a theft or a personal dispute.

A 9mm shell casing was found in the taxi. It is understood that a warrant will soon be issued and police expect a quick arrest though no details were given as to why this may be the case.

So the Pakistani had nothing to do with it, was a bit confusing at the beginning. I had visions of him fleeing on his three wheeled motorbike, umbrella flapping in the wind with his jingle blasting out loud, sort of Monty Python scenario
