BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Finance is setting up a special team to inspect social and online networking sites after business on such networks become popular while tax payment remains low.

The ministry’s permanent secretary Somchai Sujjapongse said he has ordered the deputy permanent secretary and the Revenue Department to set up a special team to check tax payment from people using social media and online networking to do businesses which are now increasing and receiving popularity.

He cited examples of some popular websites and applications such as “iShow” and “BEGO Live” live video streaming social network that enable some to achieve celebrities status and became net idols.

The team will check if these net idols and their business operators have paid taxes correctly or not as now they have large number of viewers, and have taken sideline jobs.

However he admitted that the matter is sensitive and therefore the special team needs to look thoroughly into both details and legal issues and come up with a conclusion end of this month.

He assured that the move was not meant to hurt e-commerce business but in principle anyone who have earnings from business, they must pay tax correctly as all citizen have the duty to pay tax.
