Thai villagers lay on the sarcasm in call to get their road mended

MAHA SARAKHAM: -- The latest in a series of stories designed to shame authorities into repairing potholed roads comes out of Maha Sarakham in the north east of Thailand.

Some 50 villagers had lots of photos taken as they took the sarcasm to new levels - not just bathing in the road as has been seen recently, but fishing and planting rice, reported Thairath.

They even invited a local monk to pretend he was on his alms gathering rounds for that extra dig.

And the main placard hoisted by the smiling locals ironically proclaimed: "This is Thailand".

The villagers are furious that the local authority has done nothing about their road for five years. It is barely traversable at the best of times what with all the potholes but during the rainy season it becomes nothing more than a klong.

Seven villages in the Ma Kha area rely on the road and they are demanding that a six kilometer stretch is repaired before there are more accidents.

Reporters contacted the local authority who said they are on the case.

But there has been heavy rain this year and they have to drain the area first before they can start any repairs, they said.

Recent pictures in the Thai media have shown both a model  and a group of grannies taking baths in muddy potholes to get action on their roads.

Shaming only works when directed at people who can feel shame. Officialdom here has little or none and are only motivated by their own ' interests ' and other such factors.

Criticism and loss of face can provoke an unintended reaction and excuses are ten a penny no matter how weak or ridiculous they are.

The only shame they feel is when they don't get their share of the money.

The foreigner pictured repairing potholes probably unwittingly annoyed local officials.

These villagers are deliberately having a go at local officials which will not go down well.

i think we can guess who is most likely to have the last word !

Hey listen the local government is entitled to spend the money they are given from the National government on anything they want, including themselves. Thats just the way it is. They may get him/her to fix this road but they will be punished for it I'm sure. A road near me is in disrepair leading to two villages while the next road over is beautiful with center and side stripes and leads to two massive Thai homes and a dead end. Gee I wonder who lives there.

Why go into sarcasm? Go back five years or less to see who most of you sold your votes to in local elections...

5 years ago on local election day my wife was handed money from at least 3 candidates who had diverse policies. She promised all of them that she'd vote for them and went and voted for someone else. Unless your post is a badly disguised kick at Yingluck while she's down, what is your point?

Money exchanged hands, rights sold. Stop complaining.

Accepting money from all candidates will perpetuate greedy people into position of power.

Eradicating such candidates is the answer that the budget is put to full use and not into pockets.
