Floods Expected in Southwest

Featured Replies

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology warned residents in six southwestern provinces to brace for possible floods during the final days of the Pchum Ben festival. According to an announcement posted on the ministry’s Facebook page yesterday, heavy rain from Saturday to Monday is expected to hit Pursat, Kampong Chhnang, Kandal, Takeo and Kampot provinces.

“According to the forecast, weather conditions will see more rain in lowland and plateau areas, while the coastal areas may also see a fairly large amount of rainfall too,” read the announcement. The announcement added that the southwest monsoon, which ends this month, is set to bring additional rainfall to the country through the Gulf of Thailand. The low pressure system, which brings with it stormy weather and strong winds, will also affect Thailand and southern Laos.

Separately, Anlong Veng commune police chief Vong Chan told Khmer Times that the Ta Mok bridge in Meanchey province’s Anlong Veng district, which was flooded last week and subsequently closed, had been reopened to commuters on Saturday. The bridge was closed for two days before water levels receded enough for it to be reopened. “The Ta Mok bridge was opened on the 24th last week because the water had receded. It has since receded over a meter today because it did not rain,” Mr. Chan said, adding that the two-day flood did not cause any injuries as it was consistently monitored by authorities.
