George FmplesdaCosteedback
Okay I just looked it up... Spelling is the same but pronunciation is different. Jake Freyer, Linguistics major at Harvard College Written 15 Feb 2014 The accepted word is “Nigerien”—as opposed to “Nigerian,” for someone from Nigeria. It’s quite confusing, though in speech you would say the former like it was French (something like nee-ZHER-iã) to distinguish them. The name of the country of Niger is locally pronounced closer to nee-ZHER, rather than NAI-jer as we would say in English. This is entirely because it was a French colony: the name of the Niger River, after which both Niger and Nigeria are named, is pronounced both ways, depending on which country you are in. Though “Nigerien” is the standard for a resident of Niger, as used by the BBC and Associated Press (I believe), The New York Times chooses to say “Nigerois” instead, to create a clearer difference. bheard
Glad there were no sounds effects included in this report. The sound of a man from Niger squealing could put me on edge all day . . .
