The accepted word is “Nigerien”—as opposed to “Nigerian,” for someone from Nigeria. It’s quite confusing, though in speech you would say the former like it was French (something like nee-ZHER-iã) to distinguish them.

The name of the country of Niger is locally pronounced closer to nee-ZHER, rather than NAI-jer as we would say in English. This is entirely because it was a French colony: the name of the Niger River, after which both Niger and Nigeria are named, is pronounced both ways, depending on which country you are in.

Though “Nigerien” is the standard for a resident of Niger, as used by the BBC and Associated Press (I believe), The New York Times chooses to say “Nigerois” instead, to create a clearer difference.
