American sweep and European rally at Ryder Cup

DOUG FERGUSON, AP Golf Writer

CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — The Americans swept the opening session of the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1975, then hung on to take a 5-3 lead after the first day at Hazeltine.

Almost as impressive as the Americans winning all the foursomes matches in the morning was the way Europe battled back. Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose atoned for their morning loss by making nine birdies in 13 holes to hand Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed their first loss.

Rory McIlroy and rookie Thomas Pieters finished off the long, raucous day with a 3-and-2 victory over Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar. McIlroy ended it with a 20-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole, and he mockingly bowed twice to the crowd.

The United States also had a 5-3 lead at Medinah four years ago.

I don't see this event as much more than a good time for the golfers, same as a scramble at your local course. Golf is not and never will be a team sport. For me I play against myself every time I hit the ball, when you worry about the other guy you will surely screw up your shot.  Best individual sport ever as you can play into your 80s and longer sometimes. Bowling is right up there too, but I never was any good at it.

A bit of pride as well, but golf is absolutely NOT a team sport. I still like Ryder Cup and the women's Solheim Cup, but the only thing that matters in professional golf are Majors. Any golfer would trade a dozen Ryder Cups for just one major, but no golfer would ever trade a single major for all the Ryder or Solheim Cups. Ryder and Solheim are for the fans and television.
