CDC confirms no independent organizations to be disbanded

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 1 October 2016 (NNT) – The Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Commission has affirmed that no independent organizations will be dissolved once the new charter is put into effect.

CDC Chairman Meechai Ruchuphan said that Chairman of the Election Commission Supachai Somcharoen visited the charter drafting team to explain the ideas behind the drafting of the law that governs the election of members of parliament.

Mr. Meechai said that the EC has already submitted their two draft laws, which involve the election.

He added that the CDC will continue collecting ideas and opinions from all related parties before the actual drafting process begins.

The CDC Chairman also affirmed that, once the new Constitution is in effect, members of all independent organizations will still be continuing their duties.

He went on to say that, for instance, the disbandment of the CDC must be backed with logical legal reasons.

No "logical legal reason" is required. The 2016 draft Charter approved by referendum currently doesn't recognize the CDC as a Constitutional (formerly called "Independent") Organization? Continued existence of the CDC after endorsement of the 2016 draft charter would seem at worse to be a violation of the Constitution or at best an unwritten, unconstitutional amendment.

Seems the drafters of the new constitution paradoxically don't view it with much respect.

Of course. Why would a committee tasked with drafting the constitution have to be disbanded after that job is finished? Oh, right. Their salaries and addiction to power. I suppose they will continue amending it to read whatever they want once it has already gone into effect. Farce doesn't begin to describe this governing process.

I'm not even sure why the media needs to keep reporting on these developments. We get the picture--they do what they want and get away with it every time. Just wake us up when there's another coup or uprising.

At this rate, the 2025 Thai government is going to consist of one hundred agencies consisting of thousands of friends and family members of the junta employed at taxpayer expense.
