PM pleased with Bangkok ranking top of world's most visited cities

BANGKOK, 1 October 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he was pleased with the latest tourism ranking of Bangkok as top of the world’s most visited cities in 2016.

In his weekly televised address, the premier said that the annual Mastercard Global Destinations Cities Index has reported that Bangkok was viewed as the top-ranking destination city by international overnight visitors with over 22 million arrivals projected throughout this year.

Bangkok also has the advantage of its geographical location and diversity in tourist destinations, merchandise, food, culture, entertainment and conveniences in transportation, he said.

However, Bangkok will strongly suggest world tourists to stay longer and increase their spending per capita while the Thai capital city is yet to live up to standards of quality for its tourist attractions, services and safety measures, he said.

He added that Thailand hosted the celebrations of “2016 World Tourism Day" which was attended by leading tourism industry operators from 157 countries worldwide during September 26 and 29 in Bangkok and Khon Kaen.

The event was considered a success because all the Thais provided impressive hospitality to the attendees, he said.

Because Thailand is cheaper than the other regional transit hubs?

Until relocating to Thailand, Singapore was my transit hub of choice in Southeast Asia.

Apart from being a destination Bangkok itself is very much a transit hub where many of the long hauls end up because of distance limitations. This is now changing as technology is improving and new aircraft are being introduced. Here is an excerpt I read from a story about Singapore Airlines getting out of the Airbus A380 and moving into new technology non-jumbo type aircraft.

“The airline industry has really bought into to the new technology delivered by the A350 and Boeing 787, which have impressive range capabilities and are able to bypass the traditional hubs and operate at lower capacities with improved profit margins".

Meaning that other major airports into Asian countries like Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea and parts of China will now have access to more direct long haul links than previously available and Bangkok will be by-passed. Madam TAT will not be pleased.

For decades, if we could not get a flight to Europe for the holidays, we would wait in Thailand for one to become available.

TAT has not done a good enough job expanding tourism in east Thailand and Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Burma all have something to offer.  Thailand's jowly usurper of universal suffrage should not consider this such a triumph, but he will.  He loves giving himself pats on the back.

" international overnight visitors" suggests someone staying at a hotel overnight prior to catching an early morning flight home or to somewhere else. It hardly fits the 'visitor' category.

Yes and Atlanta Georgia is also one of the busiest in the World. Not much reason to stay there though other than the connecting flight.

Ask at any shop any Bangkok mall. 'Quality tourist' in the trade is defined by per-day expenditures, and on that basis the Chinese are just fine, thank you very much.
