Rainwater at Chao Phraya dam remains at normal level: Deputy irrigation chief

  

BANGKOK, 5 October 2016 (NNT) - Deputy Irrigation Department director general Tongpleow Tongchan assured that an increased volume of rainwater at Chao Phraya dam has remained at normal level while the authorities can manage to keep it under control. 

Mr. Tongpleow said the rainwater from areas north of the dam in Chainat province was considered normal and manageable at 1,853 cubic meters per second. In the meantime, the water volume below the dam has ebbed before it has flown down to Bangkok, thanks to ''monkey's-cheek'' reservoirs and low-lying areas along the way, he said. 

The rainwater was reduced to 1,700 cubic meters per second when it reached Bangkok and such volume will not adversely affect the capital city unless it amounted up to 3,500 cubic meters per second, the deputy director general commented. 

He confirmed that the Irrigation Department has closely monitored the situation on hourly basis and recommended that the people be confident of the agency's ability to manage it. 

Water pumps have already been prepared to keep excessive water from flooding residential and farm areas in the provinces, he said.
