October 6, 20169 yr Does VoLTE provide any benefit over a 3G network for international calls? I have AIS in Thailand and my destination is the US (I intend to use an app that gives me a USA phone number as well). Thanks

Let's start with the basic, VoLTE only works on a 4G LTE network, so not going to happen over a 3G network. VoLTE is supposed to provide clearer phone calls as well as faster connection time compare to traditional 3G/2G. And no, both side need not be using VoLTE to hear a difference(if any). Just you using VoLTE may make your phone conversation sounds clearer.
October 11, 20169 yr Author Good to know. AIS told me they are 4G now. Not sure if it is 4g LTE though.
October 16, 20169 yr "Does VoLTE provide any benefit over a 3G network for international calls?" No. VoLTE really only works on 4G (LTE). AIS and DTAC did just announce VoLTE interoperability, http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/AIS-DTAC-nod-to-cross-network-VoLTE-calls-30297605.html but for now both parties (calling/called) need to be on the same network. You also need a VoLTE capable handset and you need to be registered for the service. Without VoLTE both parties need to fall back from 4G to 3G to make/receive a call, and this can lead to longer call completion times. Edited October 16, 20169 yr by mtls2005
