Pollution Control Dept to find out cause of deaths of manta rays in Samut Songkram

SAMUT SONGKRAM, 10 October 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Pollution Control has collected water and mud samples and remains of manta rays to find out the cause of deaths of the fish in Samut Songkram province.

Samut Songkram provincial governor Kanchat Tansatian said a large number of manta rays had mysteriously died in Mae Klong River, prompting department director general Vicharn Simachaya to have department officials collect the water and mud samples and remains of the dead manta rays for examination.

The authorities are yet to determine the cause of the deaths of those manta rays while measures will be taken to protect any more from any fatal diseases, he said.

Heavy rainfalls might have swept residues of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and other toxic waste from farm areas into the river, possibly causing the deaths of the fish, he said.

A total of 38 manta rays in Samut Songkram province have reportedly died but two pregnant manta rays have survived, the provincial governor said. Local villagers have been advised to help watch for any more deaths of the fish and notify the authorities.

I would amend the headline to say "causes" (plural).  Few things have the power of Thais working together to destroy the environment by any and all means possible.

I still think a large hog operation lost its waste pond into the river. Deadly

Manta rays in the river there?

Over fishing?

Manta rays are filter feeders, living on plankton, sounds more like poison,

as if it was pollution, they would just swim away.....right?

Wait a second...is this correct or a typo?

Does Thailand actually have a "Pollution Control Department"?

I don't know or care, I am only stating that the waste ponds on these are very dangerous,  A pond wall of one collapsed where I lived in the states and killed every fish for 40 miles of river instantly as the waste flowed down the river. That being said I don't intend to stop eating pork any time soon.  I'm sure whatever side of politics you are on owns none of them though.
