Northern farmers have found a way to earn some extra cash on the side while they wait for their rice to grow — they collect crickets!

Crickets have turned into a great source of extra income for those working in the fields in the Northern province of Phayao, they can collect as much as THB300 - THB400 a day when they sell the live insects that they collect from the crops.

Edible crickets, called jing reed in Thai, are a much-loved snack that are, apparently, delicious as well as high in protein. The biggest crickets can be sold live to food vendors for THB2 each. In turn, those vendors can sell the cooked crickets to customers for as much as THB6 each.

They are in fashion among the lefties in Europe...maybe they should organise foodtours for them upcountry..i'm serious.

World Food Program has been funding cricket farms in Laos for years- gram for gram they have more protein than steak. Far more efficient to raise as well.

Yum,careful not to get a Cricket leg stuck in your throat.

I've tried them--bland, a little greasy, mushy texture.  Better than going hungry, but not exactly fine dining.

There are several universities in the USA that are experimenting with grinding them into flour and then using that flour as a protein source/supplement. Much more palatable that way. I think it's a great idea.

To think I could have started a business selling roasted crickets in Australia

Instead I just used a pressure washer to remove them from my trucks radiator

Its beyond experimentation bugsolutely in Bangkok are exporting cricket pasta to the world

Just 2 nights ago a cricket was making a horrideous noise outside the bedroom window . Off went the TW and caught the bugger she too said " 2B in the Friday market "  Such excitement up here in the north.
