Restaurant Sector Booming

Featured Replies

The restaurant industry is booming in Phnom Penh and the country’s provincial capitals due to rising incomes, said Kouch Sokly, president of the Restaurant Association of Cambodia. Speaking at the Camfood’16 and CamHotel’16 press conference yesterday, Mr. Sokly said there were more than 2,500 restaurants nationwide registered with the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Tourism.

He said close to 1,000 restaurants were in Phnom Penh, while the rest were in provinces like Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Battambang and Kampong Cham.

“The restaurant business seems to be growing fast every year and there is more room for growth due to the Cambodian people having more disposable income as their standard of living increases,” said Mr. Sokly. “On the average, urban Cambodians spend at least $7 on food and drinks each time they eat out.” Mr. Sokly pointed out that the country’s restaurant sector could have a turnover of between $300 million to $400 million a year.
