Thailand and Maldives agree to expand bilateral trade, investment

BANGKOK, 13 October 2016 (NNT) - Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said the second Joint Thai-Maldives Trade Committee meeting had agreed to lift import tariffs on Thai products in the island state.

The Thai and Maldives governments had agreed to promote and expand bilateral trade and investment as well as tourism. In particular, cooperation in fishing, labor and health affairs will be developed, she said.

She said Thailand plans to have some 200 million dollars in bilateral trade with Maldives in 2018 while the island state has agreed to waive some import tariffs on the Thai goods.

Meanwhile, the Maldives government is encouraging Thai prospective investors to go in on food industry and open schools to teach tourism and hotel business in the island state, she said.

Each year, more than 120,000 people visit Maldives which has a population of about 350,000.

Serious desperation here when the Thai government make a big thing of a trade deal with the Maldives. The Maldives is a Mickey Mouse country with a population less than 0.5m people. Still any trade deal is better than no trade deal at all and is something worthy for the Commerce Minister Tantraporn to crow about.

It's all about the tuna & Thai Union

Next up: Magnificently lucrative, beneficial, headline-worthy trade deals with San Marino, Andorra, Tuvalu, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Cape Verde, and the Comoros.

But as my grandma used to say: "Small livestock produces dung, too. You just need to have enough of them."

Forget Kiribati, the Maldives are sinking too................about 80 years ahead.

" As a result, the Maldives are at high risk of being submerged due to rising sea levels. The UN's environmental panel has warned that, at current rates, sea level rise would be high enough to make the Maldives uninhabitable by 2100.[59][60] " wikipedia.

This makes perfect sense as the government in the Maldives is known to be totally corrupt, murdering opposition members and journalists.

They are run by a self confessed mafia and heavily into money laundering.

Sounds like a perfect fit for the bunch in control here at the moment.  They'll probably swap notes on silencing opposition as well as sign some lucrative cleaning deals.

Well perhaps Thailand has struck the right chord , both the Maldives and Thailand are slowly sinking ,one by global warming and one by the Junta.....................................................................:coffee1:

I have a friend that moved from here to there, I am going to visit him, I will leave my pen , paper, and camera behind just in case you are right. I could wash a few dollars for a fee though.
