Opera Browser and VPN

Featured Replies

Just thought I would contribute my take on the Opera 40.0 browser and VPN aspects for the Windows PC and interested to hear of other TV member comments and experiences.

In general I've found it easy to set up and use, fast and reliable and had no problems after 3 weeks of use.

I am aware that with Opera 40.0 I only get a "browser VPN" but, it is free.....  I also use Hola both on the PC and as an extension in Chrome and Opera (I understand Hola has P2P sharing aspects which concern some users).

I turned to Opera as I wanted to get away from Chrome which has been my staple browser for some years now but seems to have more and more "issues" on my PC over time; slowdowns, unresponsive pages......
Opera's built-in VPN seems to work although I use it simply with sites such as Pandora and some others and turn it off when not needed.

Opera's VPN service is only for the browser and seems to have limited options for locations you can set (I use the optimal location setting).  This works for me so far.

Unfortunately for me, Opera  does not support IBMs Trusteer Endpoint Protection which is another good "protection" tool in use by many banks and other corporates.  It's free for personal use & good for highly sensitive use such as internet banking. For that I still have to defer to Chrome.

All of my "protection" apps are free ones which I suppose makes me a cheap charlie but I don't use any subscription streaming services (apart from Pandoras free version of course) so not sure how my setup would work with the likes of Netflix or Hulu and the like.   I expect I will soon move my Android devices form Chrome to Opera also if it keeps performing as well as it is currently.

What is it that you prefer about Puffin?

The problem with using the VPN in Opera (which you can easily turn on and off at the left of the address bar) is that sites like gmail and paypal immediately throw a fit because you appear to be signing on from a country that they haven't seen you sign on from before. So you end up going through all their security procedures.  This a  pain, even though I appreciate the reason for it, and I would like a way of opting out, at my own risk, because a vpn could appear to have you situated anyway other than where you are.

I have used the VPN, with gmail in particular and other google apps and I do understand what you're saying having experienced the security screening before but it's strange I have not experienced it with Opera yet even when starting and stopping the VPN process??  Very odd and begs an answer I would think so I'll test it again and report it to the Opera guys.

Thanks for raising this.
