Illegal forest clearing triples but fines down: MAFF report

Illegal forest clearing in Cambodia has tripled this compared to the rate last year, but fines for forestry and wildlife crimes have dropped dramatically, according to a progress report released last week by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Fisheries (MAFF).

 

The MAFF report catalogues all statistics from the ministry for the first nine months of this year and shows markedly different figures across the board to the figures in the same report released last year, according to the Phnom Penh Post Online on Friday.

 

For instance, seizures of chain saws through October were little more than half what they were in the same period last year although a new anti-logging task force was created on the orders of Prime Minister Hun Sen at the start of the year.
