Foam boxes are still widely used to contain food although some have turned to other more dissoluble materials

BANGKOK: -- As foam boxes used to contain food pose an environmental problem because they are difficult to dissolve, several state agencies which have been distributing free food to mourners at Sanam Luang have turned to environment-friendly food containers such as banana leaves and dissoluble materials to contain food.

Garbage, especially discarded foam boxes, has become a big headache for officials in charge of garbage management at Sanam Luang and surrounding areas where tens of thousands of people arrive each day to pay respect to their beloved King.

Mourners have been told by the city administration to bring with them plastic boxes to contain food and canteens to reduce the use of foam boxes and bottled drinking water. Up to 76 tonnes of rubbish are discarded each day.

Dhamma Army volunteers manning their food kiosk were seen on Wednesday using banana leaves to wrap food to be distributed to the mourners.

Mrs Nimit Tiammongkol, one of the volunteers, said she had her colleagues used banana leaves to make food containers.

Well, DUH. It's a problem EVERYWHERE in Thailand, in the world unless they are banned.

They are made with styrene and called polystyrene. I know as worked at a chemical company that made plastic resins. There are now plants using corn to make the same product that is biodegradable. How much more it cost than the old Styrofoam I don't know.

Sorry to be a pedant but is "dissoluble"  a word. I think they mean insoluble. But the correct word is nondegradable.

"Dissoluble" is a word. "Insoluble" refers to not being able to dissolve in water.

I have the answer. Word to politicians quit all this economic bs falderal and set your teeth into this major environmental problem. Much like doing away with plastic shopping bags and buying reusable bags we should all carry a fresh washed plastic container with a lid and just say like driving a car "Fill er up"
