cheeryble
Hi I believe, but not sure, that stainless tube comes in 6m lengths. I need about 3m20cm of 32mm outside diameter. I know a couple of stainless fabricators around Hang Dong and Ban Tawai, but happen to know they don't have 32mm handy in the length, and won't want to buy in a 6m and have the waste left over, so if it's possible I'd rather go to a supplier and ask for the length I need. They are difficult for me to communicate with which doesn't help. So the question is, will suppliers cut to length or not, and can anyone recommend where to go, pref between Hang Dong and CM but if I have to go further of course I will. (I know they sell full lengths on the Superhwy just east of the Ping bridge, but it's a bit out of the way unless I know they'll cut to length.) Just posting to see if I can save some time! wayned
I don't live in CM but the fabricator that I deal with will sell me any length that I want. I just take a tape, pick out what I want from his rack, and show him how long and he cuts it to length from a long piece. I'd go and ask the one that is most convenient for you. Crossy
Yeah Wayne, I think the key is "fabricator", the steel shops will cut to length, but they still only sell it by the 6m run.
eyecatcher
Not saying they have it or not but I have been to a steel fabrication workshop that does specialised stuff; bending steel etc in your vicinity (and mine) Go up the Hang Dong road and past Makro on the left. a bit further on take the left at the 7/11 and head down towards Baan Wang Tan. Just at the forked entrance into BwT on the left over the klong is the steel factory. I have been there a couple of times, its a gem actually, and cheap to boot. do a google drive by first from your keyboard if you can manage with chrome tube then you can see any roadside gate and railing fabricator and get them to prepare you a length
impulse
Your price for the full, uncut 6 meter piece will probably be close to, or even less than the price of a custom cut 3.2 meter piece. Most steel wholesalers have to charge more per meter for a custom cut piece than a full length, to cover the probability that they'll be looking at the 2.8 meter drop you leave behind for a looooong time. Back home, they'd also have to cover labor for the cut and for recording the change in their inventory, though that's probably negligible here. cheeryble
Thanks for comments. Eye-catcher are you saying all the "stainless" gates I see are not stainless but chrome? Isn't it visible at the welds?

Eye-catcher are you saying all the "stainless" gates I see are not stainless but chrome? Isn't it visible at the welds? and thats a big question.....have those gates been chromed . I have seen them making them from steel tube, burning cutting and welding together like a regular frame; then the next day they are all nice and shiny. Stainless steel, and correct me if I am wrong can be identified as its much duller than shiny chrome. but fire me down chaps if I am dreaming
Crossy
Our shiny gates are definitely stainless steel, the installers TIG welded extra brackets on site, chrome plate would have blistered and peeled, these buffed up nicely with a wire wheel in the angle-grinder. Stainless often looks dull because it has a hair finish which is easier on the eye on large surfaces, but some grades can be polished to a mirror finish. rawhod
Just check with a magnet... austenitic stainless steel such as 304 will not be attracted to a magnet
