US Embassy Outreach

Featured Replies

I attended the Pattaya embassy outreach yesterday with Kasikorn bank draft in hand. No problems. BUT some people came with Cashiers' Cheques or some other variation and were sent away to get a bank draft.

Just a warning for future Outreach attendees. Make sure you bring a "bank draft."

Exactly why a cashier's cheque is unacceptable ... I have no idea.

Not sure where they got a cashiers check here. I have only ever heard of a bank drafts being used here.

Perhaps some got a money order from the post office.

How much was the fee for the bank draft.

I didn't see what they had. I heard the woman from the embassy say it was a cashier's cheque and she got on the phone with someone, i guess back at the embassy, and then said it was unacceptable. Several people were told to go to a nearby Kasikorn and get a draft instead of whatever it was they had brought.

I think on the top of the correct cheque from Kasikorn it says "bill of exchange," and that was what they were looking to see.

Before I went to Kasikorn on Pattaya Tai, I went to the Kaskorn website, searched for "draft" and then printed out the information in the Thai language. I took it with me. People at the bank seemed a bit perplexed because they thought I wanted it in foreign exchange, but eventually I got the correct thing.

I just checked on Bangkok Bank's website and they do list "cashier's cheques."

Only 20 Baht.

I needed one for the income affidavit ($50) which cost Baht 1750 this month and the total charge at Kasikorn was Baht 1770.

Note for others, you need to check the exchange rate used by the embassy just before an Outreach. This month they used $1 = Baht 35, so the $50 charge translated to baht 1750, but it might be different in future.
