Water festival: Two millions tourists this week end in P. Penh

Featured Replies

The number of tourists visiting Phnom Penh is expected to increase during the three-day Water Festival that starts this Sunday, said a Ministry of Tourism official yesterday. “Both foreign and local tourists will join the annual Water Festival and we can expect more of them this year in Phnom Penh compared with previous years,” said Chhay Kunlong, the deputy director general of the tourism department at the Ministry of Tourism.

“Last year, the Water Festival was cancelled due to low water levels in the Tonle Sap river. This year, however, it is on again. Of course, this year’s celebration in Phnom Penh will bring in large numbers of people from all over the country,” added Mr. Kunlong. Mr. Kunlong told Khmer Times that the capital was well prepared to ensure the safety of foreign tourists at the Water Festival.

“We are working with the National Police on that,” he said. More than two million people are expected to be in Phnom Penh during the Water Festival, according to figures from the National Police.
