Thai jasmine rice and cassava are still in high global demand

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Commerce is now launching a campaign to promote Thai rice and cassava with confidence of the high global demand of the two potential crops.

It is now inviting foreign buyers to visit the country and conclude business deals.

Minister for Commerce Apiradi Tantraporn said that the Department of International Trade Promotion and the Department of Foreign Trade have joined forces to organize a rice and cassava trade fair which is scheduled for November 13 – 16.

She said more than 290 major international rice importers from 29 countries have agreed to attend the event while more than 110 local rice exporters have also given their consent.

She was hopeful that new orders will be generated in the event which will greatly help the country speed up the release of its rice stocks.

This will be especially good for jasmine rice which has the highest production numbers during the latter part of every year which with the increased demand created by the event, will help to drive up prices.

Meanwhile the director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade, Ms Malee Chokelamlert, revealed that 6 major Chinese rice and cassava importers have also consented to attending the event.

She said that this has been made possible because Thai jasmine rice is in very high demand with Chinese consumers despite costing more than regular white rice.

Moreover, she was certain that Chinese companies had plans to negotiate an agreement to import several hundreds of thousand tons of Thai cassava per year which is very promising.

At the same time, the director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade, Ms Duangporn Rodphayathi, insisted  that the demand for Thai rice on the international market is still very high.

If i had to get rid of a huge stock of "old" rice i would start promoting it abroad myself and give decent discounts for big buyers.

What if they don't dare to come to Thailand because scared for bombs or whatever reason?

Now they even have to pay farmers for stockpiling their rice, better give discount to the customer i would think.

Good luck negotiating in a buyer's market.

That's a headline straight out of TAT's playbook

Thailand dropped the ball with the yingluck fiasco of thinking they could control world rice prices and that's left a dirty mark that most rice dealers want avoid.

Problem is Thailand is not the only player and likes of India is far more capable at rice production, marketing and making deals .

- at the right price.

but let us hope they have enough time to get proper business visas for Thailand or they may be harassed by immigration, which might be embarassing for Thailand. "Most" other countries do not require business visas just to attend a trade fair.

And Vietnam.

The PM has been globetrotting for the past 12 months trying to drum up export business. All we have heard about is import business such as submarines and tanks.
