Thais Urged to Punish Attacker

Featured Replies

Cambodia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is pushing Thai authorities to punish a Burmese worker who stabbed a Cambodian colleague in the chest during a fight. The Cambodian was left unconscious and faced expensive medical bills, the ministry said.

Chan Reaksmey Mengheang, 22, from Banteay Meanchey province, went to Thailand without proper documents in April to work at a rubbish collection company on the outskirts of Bangkok. The victim got into an argument with his undocumented Burmese co-worker and was stabbed once in the chest on October 25, leaving him seriously injured.

Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said: “Besides pushing for punishment according to the law, the embassy is demanding that the victim’s employer covers the cost of his treatment.” The ministry said the Cambodian worker received 7,500 baht (about $200) in aid when the Cambodian consul visited him in hospital in Nonthaburi province. However, the victim spent 120,000 baht (about $3,500) on his treatment.
