More Than One Phone for Every Cambodian

As the manufacturing of electronic goods becomes ever more efficient, mobile phones and other high-tech gadgets get cheaper and become affordable for an ever-increasing number of Cambodians.  Speaking at the opening ceremony of BarCamp ASEAN 2016 on Saturday, Chun Vat, secretary general of National ICT Development Authority, said most people can afford to own more than one phone nowadays. 


According to Mr. Vat, Cambodia’s 15 million people own 19 million phones, and 7 million Cambodians now use the Internet.  “Recently we have witnessed an astonishing acceleration in the adoption of technology in Cambodia, especially in terms of mobile-phone and Internet use,” he said. 


However, Norton University Rector Chan Sok Khieng said we should not get carried away with the recent changes, cautioning that there is a long way to go when it comes to technological advancement in Cambodia.  “In the ’90s, any Cambodian who could use a computer was credited with being an expert. This is no longer true; times have changed and now almost everyone can use a computer – even the kids,” he said.
