November 12, 20169 yr HI, I have a TCL smart, (though not that smart) TV and have just bought an LG DVD/Home Theatre system. Sound is great when playing a DVD, but for the life of me, I can't get the sound from the normal TV to go through the theatre system ? DVD is connected to the TV via HDMI at the moment. Any and all help is appreciated.
November 12, 20169 yr Two possibilities: The TV and amp may be compatible with the HDMI audio return channel: http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/arc.aspx You would need to check the spec for both to be sure, but if they are then all you need is a suitable HDMI lead and the correct configuration on both. Otherwise your TV probably has an optical audio output that can be connected to the amp, and this allows for the return audio. Either way you will need to read your manuals.
November 12, 20169 yr Shouldn't all your connections go through your AV amp? You TV should simply be the screen now.Sent from my R2D2 using my C3P0 manservant
November 12, 20169 yr I suppose that your DVD has both HDMI and standard outs, right and left audio and video. Try hooking the standard output from the DVD to a selectable input on the Home system and the video to a AV input on the TV. HDMI to TV, right and left audio directly to the HT amplifier. That's how I have my True set top box wired and it works fine. When I watch TV it pays through the amp through the HDMI connection to the TV and the audio input on channel 1 on the AMP. When I watch a DVD I switch to AV1 on the TV and channel 2 on the amp where the DVD audio is connected.
November 18, 20169 yr You need an optical audio output lead. Cost a few 100 Baht. http://www.lazada.co.th/od22-optical-fiber-cable-digital-audio-lead-toslink-spdif-sky-2m-intl-8209184.html Edited November 18, 20169 yr by elfpattaya
November 18, 20169 yr Author I bought this one as I have the SPDIF port on the TV, (no optical port), and the optical port on the DVD, so fingers crossed it will work :-) http://www.lazada.co.th/jetting-buy-audio-cable-wire-for-toslink-digital-optical-spdif-4376809.html
November 18, 20169 yr I bought a TCL "smart" TV a few months ago, the 43-inch LED 43S4800. AFAICT, it doesn't have a hardware headphones/audio output, but it does have Bluetooth connectivity that allows you to play audio from portable devices to the TV via Bluetooth. Then on the back, it does have a SPDIF output port, and a pair of L-R RCA audio out ports.

I've read thru the pretty minimal TCL manual for my TV, and can't find any mention anywhere re having HDMI ports that are ARC capable. Nor are the ports labeled as such. They may well be, but if they are, TCL doesn't appear to be telling.
November 18, 20169 yr Plug your TV into your AV amp. I presume you're using some sort of TV box, so TV Box to AV Amp, DVD to AV Amp, X-Box to AVAmp, Anythingelse to AV Amp then: AV Amp to TV
November 18, 20169 yr If you're answering to me above,... first, no audio amp second, on this particular TV, Fire TV 1st gen stick instead of Fire TV box, so no HDMI out capability. Edited November 18, 20169 yr by TallGuyJohninBKK

You can tell it to use your preferred media player.

If you look in the audio or connection menus you may see something relating to audio return. i dont think that the HDMI ports are ever labelled like that. Optical/SPDIF outputs seem to be very common though, even on lesser known brands.

December 4, 20169 yr I've experienced similar problems with my TCL LED48D2730. Great picture for the money, but very poor sound - especially dialogue. Purchased an LG sound bar (LAS750M) with 4.1 audio channels - then my problems began. I discovered when connecting the sound bar that there were no compatible ports between the TV and the sound bar. The TV has two audio outputs - a coaxial (RCA) SPDIF and a headphone jack. The SPDIF is a digital signal and the headphone an analog. The sound bar has all of the digital inputs (optical (TOSLINK), HDMI and HDMI ARC) plus Ethernet and portable device). The technician from the shop where I purchased the sound bar connected the TV to the sound bar using a 3.5 mm TRS cable - TV headphone outlet to sound bar 'portable device' inlet. I'm pretty sure that this method is all analog and I am not utilizing my digital 4.1 channel signal. After hours of research and web surfing I came up with this solution: I have purchased a converter box that converts digital coaxial to optical - digital RCA to TOSLINK. I purchased the converter from Lazada, price 954 baht. Lazada had 5-6 models ranging in price from 400 to 2500 baht. Note: the majority of the converters were digital to analog - I avoided these types as I wanted digital to digital. Waiting to receive converter box.
